LDP causes weakness in the muscles relating to vocalization

When the larynx is in a deepened position, it causes weakness in the muscles relating to vocalization.
The muscles directly associated with LDP relating to vocalization are thin with a narrow range of motion. This is because the muscle strength is proportional to the area of muscle mass.
The longer you have LDP, the worse your weakened muscle status becomes. If you feel choking and/or it is difficult for your throat or voice to sing a song, than you should not just stand by. You should consider all three of the following treatment options.
To resolve LDP is 1: Flexibility of musculus extrinsic laryngis, including muscles relating to vocalization.
and 2: Forward displacement of the larynx.
Recently, through real-life case studies, we found 3: Increasing muscle strength (daily exercise routines) relating to vocalization is also an important factor to repair/fix LDP.
Even if circumstances of 1 and 2 are met, it is common for people to have LDP return again. This is because the root cause is still unknown.
As a Voice Care Professional, I firmly believe to prevent a recurrence of LDP, 3 is also needed after fixing 1 and 2.
If muscle strength is improved and the range of motion in the muscles relating to the vocalization returns, both will increase preventing a future recurrence, and it will be easier to let out the voice as well as having noticeable better singing abilities. Furthermore, if you also focus to improve the cricothyroid muscle’s strength, you’ll see your voice range is going to be wider.
LDP(Larynx deep position) is the abbreviation, which refers to the process in which the larynx gets in deeper than normal and the muscles relating to vocalization stiffen. This is a treatable condition, not an incurable disease.

Trouble letting out the voice after having the throat choked

Several people over the years have visited me at my clinic, stating: they have a problem letting out their voice after the trauma of having their throat choked.
The reason ‘why someone chocked my neck’ is the common explanation of martial arts, wrestling or judo. A sport where the throat is often hit directly when fighting. Others are, I hit my throat when falling down, or the neck was struck by an air-bag in a car accident. e.g.
First and most importantly, go see a Doctor for an evaluation to check the movement of your vocal cord and see if the hyoid bone is broken or not.
If nothing is broken nor any other problems are identified at the hospital, then the issue is with the musculus extrinsic laryngis.
A problem with the musculus extrinsic laryngis is usually caused by (1)injury to the muscles relating to vocalization, (2)larynx deep position(LDP) or (3)subluxation of the cricothyroid articulation/or the arytenoid cartilage.
The course of action to start is to recover from all of the above 3 factors.
However, it is harder to treat if you have bleeding or any type of scar or adhesion on any of the muscles relating to the vocalization.
If you cherish your voice or are a Professional Singer, please in the future try to avoid and prevent from having those kinds of injuries.

Note1:Some Professional Singers have had to abruptly end their careers due to problems with controlling their musical pitch, after being choked around the neck.
The reason why it is unstable, and they can’t control their pitch is because the muscles relating to vocalization lost their mobility.
If you get injured in the throat, the cricothyroid muscle or superior laryngeal nerve, it becomes impossible to let out a high-pitch singing voice.
This is fatal for a Career Singer.

Why its good for Singers & Songwriters to listen to a lot of different music

Often when you hear a song, a melody or set of lyrics will sometimes sound familiar to you, even though it is your first time hearing that specific song.
Currently, there is diverse music all over the world. It is becoming difficult to create a popular song with an original melody and lyrics.
Some Singer-Song writers claim that if they listen to someone’s song, (because they are also musicians) the song is stuck in their head and they cannot make their own raw original song. Ultimately they end up incorporating the stuck melody into their own evolved version. Many Singer-Song Writers try not to listen music before writing, in the hopes of not being easily influenced.
I understand that approach, but cannot agree.
Although it is really great to make a 100% original song, the ‘Creator’ might always be writing in the same melody range, and the ‘Listeners’ may get bored of the ‘Artist’s’ style quickly.

For example, in the case of a Novelist, if they always write novels using basic limited vocabulary and narrow-minded character paths, then their whole story would be flat, predictable and ultimately not hold the readers attention.

Following suit in that aspect, if you want to attract a lot of listeners, you should listen to a lot of music! Establish your own original style first, then evolve and be influenced by other styles around you that are fresh and attract you.

Lyrics are composed of words and music is composed of sound.
If you listen a lot of music, you are familiarizing yourself to what kind of melodies and beats are attracting the current bulk of listeners. Which, will assist your judgement when writing your own great original song.

Be mindful of the mirror effect:
If you limit yourself to only listening to a select few songs all the time, then you will unconsciously tend to copy those same old melodies or phrases all the time too, and the songs you write will always be noticeably similar to each other.

Listen to a lot of music, regardless of genre, if you are singer-song writer!

Note1:Please focus to hear every instrument, sound effect, and lyric when you listen to music.
Note2:Striving to make only one popular hit song is not an easy task to do. I don’t advise that. Instead, try to make as many songs as possible.
Because even if those songs are not top of the charts they may still supply you with industry connections leading to royalty income. That income could put you into a financially secure lifestyle and motivate you to make even more songs!

Countermeasures for a sudden hoarse voice

A hoarse voice is commonly caused by glottic closure failure or thickening of the vocal folds.
With glottic closure failure, the air is leaked because the glottic cannot close and is unable to move the vocal chord properly, in turn loosing control of vocalization causing a hoarse voice.

The root cause of a hoarse voice caused by the internal laryngeal is as follows:
1.Infection, such as a cold or flu
2.Inflammation, such as a pharyngitis or vocal cord inflammation
3.Disease, such as a vocal nodule or vocal fold polyp
4.Functional voice disorder

Countermeasure:
1.Receive treatment at an otological hospital.

The root cause of a hoarse voice caused by the external laryngeal is as follows.
1.The muscles relating to vocalization are stiff due to excessive vocalization or fatigue of the throat muscles (resulting in LDP)
2.The larynx is positioned in deep, pressing the lesser horn of cartilage to make the glottis open. This larynx deeply positioned decreases the oxygen flow to the superior laryngeal artery and veins, resulting in an edema of the vocal folds.

Countermeasures:
1.Create flexibility of the muscles relating the vocalization by stretching
2.Improve blood circulation by stretching

Note1:The muscles relating to vocalization are really small as well as delicate. You must ask a Professional, of throat and voice, to give you stretching exercises and assist you to prevent a possible injury or accident.
However, if you must wait for assistance and are in need of relief soon… find the right position of the thyroid foramen. You can massage and stretch those muscles by yourself, without worry of injury. This area is really helpful to target when you suddenly have a hoarse voice.

Increasing the range of motion of the cricothyroid articulation for muscular strength

A signer who has a rich high-pitched voice has the ability to make the cricothyroid muscle move wide and has built the cricothyroid muscle itself into having a highly strengthened condition.

The cricothyroid muscle is a very important muscle, which is used when letting out a high-pitched voice.
The cricothyroid muscle contracts, to move the cricothyroid articulation.
The cricothyroid articulation is a very small joint which is located between and connecting the thyroid cartilage to the cricoid cartilage.
The cricothyroid muscle has 2 parts, the pendant moiety part and an oblique part, whereas each contraction direction is different.
The pendant moiety and the oblique part move separately, but also have complex movements when in cooperation.
The following figure below shows: the red line is the movement of pendant moiety part, the green is the movement of oblique part and the blue circle is the complex movement for both parts in cooperation.
The cricothyroid articulation moves to make the high register.
It is very important to move the cricothyroid articulation into a wide state to be able to use the cricothyroid muscle efficiently.Even if you try to train a high-pitched voice over and over again if the cricothyroid articulation does not move properly, you won’t be able to build and strengthen the cricothyroid muscle.

Please start here by checking the movement of your cricothyroid articulation first, if you struggle to let out a high-pitched voice.

Countermeasures to offset a cheap microphone

A high quality microphone will capture your best possible voice! A low quality microphone simply will not, and when compared the level of clarity is quite noticeable.
Working as a voice care specialist I have heard and reviewed a lot of people singing. Many of whom I can instantly classify as being not good because they sound like they are forcefully letting out their voice loudly due to the sheer fact that they are using a low quality microphone.
A low quality microphone won’t be able to pick up the details of the voice and also the singer can’t hear their voice very well from the speakers. Those are the main reasons why the voice sounds like its forcefully being let out resulting in shouting and sounding strained.
In fact, I guarantee your favorite singers as well as the most popular artists never uses a cheap microphone, for example in the range of costing around 10-50 dollars.
They use really high quality expensive microphones in order to make their voice sound its best and be heard well. But the reality is that many amateur and up and coming singers just can’t afford a high quality lavish microphone.

Even if you are an amazing vocalist and copy some singers to a ‘T’ in the exact right key and tone such as in Karaoke or when singing in a live local performance, it is still quite challenging to sound the same or better than the original song which was recorded using a high quality microphone. Don’t get discouraged!

Because … there is countermeasure! There is hope in offsetting those common issues, and some small tricks I will share with you now to get the most possible out of a cheap microphone. Cover the microphone head with palms of both hands and close to your mouth as much as possible between vocalizing. This tip will make it so your voice can be heard without having to shout or strain. You will also be able to hear your voice more from the speaker as well.
If you cover the area above and around your mouth surrounding the microphone head with the both hands in a cup shape when vocalizing lengthy and strong/powerful notes, that will prevent the microphone from catch the exiting breath escaping out of the sides giving the voice a more direct and clear sound. That action is projecting your voice into the proximal phalanx of your hands.
After becoming used to the above microphone hand forms, you can then practice controlling the tone and/or volume by opening and closing your fingers.
Please use those techniques to be able to adapt and sing successfully using any kind of microphone.

The adhesion of fascia on the cricothyroid muscle

It is not easy to find the fascia of the pendant moiety or the oblique part on the cricothyroid muscle.
If you have enough experience to inspect the cricothyroid muscle, you will be able to determine the size and movement of the pendant moiety and the oblique part.
You also can know that everybody has a different cricothyroid muscle. These variances can be small or large,. The most common being having a muscular cricothyroid muscle, different sizes when comparing between the right and left muscles, having problems with moving muscles due to LDP, muscles that are really thin, or although the cricoid cartilage is big the cricothyroid muscle very well may be small.
However, sometimes, I cannot find the boundary between the pendant moiety and the oblique part on the cricothyroid muscle.
In my case, when that happens I try to look for the fascia of the cricothyroid muscle by first moving the sternohyoid muscle.
Then I sometimes find people who have the adhesion of facsia between the pendant moiety and the oblique part on the cricothyroid muscle.
If there is an adhesion of fascia between the pendant moiety and the oblique part, the cricothyroid muscle sometimes has a problem with moving, because the muscle’s movement is being restricted.
The top reasons causing adhesion are (1)External injury (massaging too strong, someone/something hitting your throat, choking your neck.e.g.) (2)Too extreme or hard vocal training (shouting too much, spending an extremely long time vocalizing, vocalizing with excessive tension.e.g.) or (3)Innate/hereditary.
The signs of adhesion are minimal. As a matter of fact many people report that there is no pain and that they can even talk normally, but definitely feel obstructed when letting out a high-pitched voice.
When I treat someone for this issue, I separate the fascia from the muscles. Doing this fixes the movement of the cricothyroid muscle, making it easy to let out a high-pitched voice again.
